LINE OR ROTARY LASER, WHICH TO CHOOSE - GRANT COOKSON 3/12/09

So you want a laser level to help you with your work or building project but not sure about the differences between a line laser and a rotating (Rotary) laser, this may help.

First of all what is a rotating laser, well this type of laser projects a dot out of the side of a rotating head which sweeps this dot 360 degrees in a level plane at approx 300rpm. As a rule of thumb this rotated dot is very hard to visibly see outdoors but is visible on indoor surfaces, the brightness of the light and the distance projected will determine how clear the mark is. So to increase the usable range you need an electronic receiver, without a receiver the usability of this style of laser is limited, both our rotating lasers the Auto1 and Manual1 come with a receiver and staff clamp included in the price and with these receivers the laser beam can be picked up at 120m radius however bright the light conditions may be. So this makes a rotating laser, when used with a receiver, ideal for outdoor levelling, they can be used for indoor alignment either visibly (when conditions are not too bright) or together with the receiver.

Line or dot visible laser levels such as the Cross1, plumb1 and Tile1 are designed for indoor use over short distances such as 10 or 20 meters, outdoors in daylight they are very limited.

So in conclusion for indoors either line or rotating and outdoors then it must be a rotary laser level

AUTO1 Rotary Laser      MANUAL1 Rotary Laser      Vs      PLUMB1 dot plumb Laser      CROSS1 cross line Laser      TILE1 floor line Laser

Note: the Manual1 has scan modes which means that the head can be set to move in arc rather than the full circle this concentrates the power of the laser beam over a small distance and so makes the laser more visible indoors

There are now on the market line lasers that can be used with special line receivers and even line and rotary lasers combined in one to check these out click here; RedBack Lasers CX440 OR RedBack Lasers CXR880
